Too many Master pieces bug
« on: June 06, 2008, 03:30:00 am »

When one of my dwarves has become posessed by the fae, he got to work in a Craftdwarf's workshop. Fine by me, I have nothing wrong with that. HOWEVER, as time when on, it became more and more apparent that all he can create are masterpieces. Every single thing he creates is now a master piece, and there is nothing i can do to stop it. This is profitable, of course, but i have my doubts that this is really fair, since, i will have MASSIVE amounts of money with minimal effort.

That's really not a bug, and you'll probably keep running into that problem as you get more legendaries either by mood or just skill accumulation.  If you don't like it, just turn crafting off on him and set him to do something else.  He'll probably be flashing blue for the rest of your fortress' life, though, which can make for a little confusion if you tend to track your dwarves' activities by their color.

Really?  I just thought it was kind of odd with the MASSIVE amount of High level items I was getting. I could easily get my run of the game with simply a few dwarves. But, I might as well enjoy it.

Read The Wiki:
It is a bug. The highest skill level possible produces masterpieces 27% of the time and exceptionals 73%.

Ah, it's back up.  Huh.  Man, I am on a roll lately.  I report like three things that aren't bugs and dismiss one that is. :<

Savok: Don't be so quick to assume it's a bug. All I see is panic and exaggeration. There's no hard data in the same vein as that DF Wiki page. Unless we see some sort of proof that the dwarf in question is actually producing masterpieces at some rate above that in the wiki, then this is still a valid event.

Well, if he really is producing nothing but masterpieces, as the OP said, then that would be a bug. But the OP's language could easily be hyperbole.

Even without 'all masterpieces', the OP's description of the overall effect is quite correct.

However, that effect is quite intentional and appropriate.  Legendary dwarves are supposed to be just that good (and just that important) -- for the most part, a big chunk of gameplay comes down to protecting and nurturing those legendary dwarves.  They're your fortresses main reason for existence in the first place, they're what makes you famous, and they're what lets you play the "big game" on the world stage (as opposed to just churning out cheap trinkets.)

Saying they break your economic relations with traders is silly.  Right now, the traders don't have much to offer -- just cheap 'small game' sustenance items.  Once you have even one of the world's few legendary craftsdwarves in your fortress, you should be able to get as much food, wood, raw material, etc as you want, within reason; that strikes me as perfectly natural.  Once you're using your wealth to pay armies, wage diplomacy, pay for magic and so forth, though, I suspect you'll find that you'll need all the legendary dwarves you can get.

Trust me. Its ALWAYS a masterpiece. In fact, my messge board is spammed with "Dwarf has created a masterpiece" It will appear regularly.  I checked the item que, and each time I see the message, only 1 item will dissapear from the cue.
