AFAIK Everything should drop to the lowest level until it encounters a supporting tile. You'll end up with solid rock, so if you're hoping for an empty space I don't think you'll get it.

That said, try it and see. Savescum if you must.

My experience is also 'Compress each x-y column independently and fully along the z-axis until it meets firm support'.
