Intimidation
« on: November 08, 2010, 10:55:15 pm »

I have a giant pile of goblin bits sitting in my refuse pile.  It'd be pretty awesome to be able to stick them on spikes and set them outside my fort as a warning to invaders.  Maybe it could create a fear penalty increasing their likeliness to retreat after taking casualties or something.

Totems could work like that, but really heads on spikes would work, a hand
skewered on a pike isn't really threatening.  You could also hang prisoners of war off the path towards your fortress, but I doubt goblins would be that easily detered.  Probably only piss them off
more.

The mention of hands on spikes gave me a mildly unrelated idea. Punishment for theft could be public hand-severing in some societies, and in a way that would be a form of intimidation.

Well that's my random idea of the day.

But yes I do also like that idea of displaying hangings to the enemy. Keep in mind that the game will eventually be of all different factions, not just dwarves vs. goblins/kobolds, so that would be a better tactic for dwarves against humans, for example, or like my previously stated punishment would be enacted by humans and would cause elves to view them as barbaric (even though they consider cannibalism fine :P ). I am excited about the societal aspects in the future.

Here I was hoping for a suggestion for the unused Intimidation skill.

Although totems, piked heads, and the like would make for excellent decorations of the foreboding killer dwarf fortress home. I'd love to flay skins and place them over plagues just to intimidate others. Corpses strewn across walls, crucified creatures dying out front.. Endless possibilities...Tree's burning to piss off the elves.

A simple search of totems and heads on spikes will reveal a plethora of suggestions pertaining to the use of body parts in an aggressive manner.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.
