I just lost two legendary miners to a little hill i didn't like. Knocked a couple fisherdwarves unconcious too.

Build the lever on the far side of the map, preferably dug into safe shelter, and set up a burrow there. Then tell everyone to hide in the burrow and don't pull the lever 'till they get there.
