Easier way to prepare for ungerground farming
« on: October 31, 2010, 02:47:24 pm »

I had a good idea just now, and i thought i'd display it... hopefully it wasn't already done/has been suggested.

The thing is, preparing for an underground farm is a bit annoying, but, what if you could MOVE the dirt into an area, and use that as your farm? Think about it, you could make a farm in/near the dining hall, and make food easier to collect. It should be possible enough, right?

If you can make a garden in the dining hall that provides anything more than a bit of seasoning and decoration, it's a sign that farming is vastly overproductive. That being said, dwarves should be capable of filling channels with dirt or soil from elsewhere with buckets, wheelbarrows or any hauling method.

I second the above post although I realize it would likely be murder to program.

it would also be terribly abused, burying merchants alive and such.

Actually, the garden thing sounds pretty good. Being able to make an underground garden would be hard though. It would have to be with flowers or trees that don't need light to survive.

I think a noble demanding a glowing-fungus garden of their own would be pretty cool. Maybe they even collect the fungi for it themselves and tend to it; weeding, watering and everything else.

Something like this would make a super-deep fortress rather easier to make, rather than having to pump water from absurd distances...

Ok I don't understand this pumping water from large distances, a Floodgate and a Deep hole leading to where you want to put it with a Pump leading to ONE square is enough, dump a load of Water through the ceiling many many Zs above, then close floodgate then activate pump which piles all that water into ONE square...

Rather then dumping dirt all over, you could combine: Pot (bucket, substitute round circular thing) + Soil + regular water = flowers/certain types of things that can be grown in a small pot.

How's that a bad thing? It's not like everything else isn't abused by now.
