22 stacked arrows as a weapon?
« on: January 25, 2008, 12:23:00 am »

A quick search and a look through the buglist came up with nothing so...
code:
You hack at The Zombie in the left lower arm from the side with your X*Iron greatsword*X!
It is mangled!
The X*Iron greatsword*X has lodged firmly in the wound!
You struggle for the X*Iron greatsword*X.
You've lost possession of the X*Iron greatsword*X.
You take out the *®*Iron arrows [22]*¯*.
You stab The Zombie in the upper body from the side with your *®*Iron arrows [22]*¯*!
It is pierced through completely!
The *®*Iron arrows [22]*¯* has lodged firmly in the wound!
Aquos Batowini, Zombie has been struck down.

I'm guessing that is NOT supposed to happen?  Apologies if I missed this in my search.

EDIT: Also, now that I have continued on in the game my sword has vanished completely.  Not on the corpse or the tile or anywhere in the area either.  That I remember hearing about before though.

I think it been reported in the past, though it's not bad it's reported again.

If I remember well, not only you can use that stack of arrows as a weapon, but it is the same than hitting the ennemy 22 times over with a single arrow...

Talk about overkill.  :p

Heck if thats the case I don't think I need my sword anymore.  I just grabbed the only thing in my inventory that even resembled a weapon.  I expected it to only grab one from my stack of throwing pointy death sticks, not grab them all in a handful and stab them into the thing's chest.

See bolded text.  That's where your sword went.  It is permanently embedded in the corpse (until it rots to bones?).

Well darn.  Oh well, I looted that sword from a skeletal swordmaster anyway.  I'll just stab stuff with arrows until i find another one to loot.  Thanks.

Swords, spears, and any weapons capable of becoming embedded, are usually pickup-able from the corpse after it's been killed. It makes no sense for the item to disappear, because you can grab onto it when the enemy's alive, and try to pry it out, but when the thing's dead, what prevents you from grabbing the weapon and prying it out without resistance? Logic aside, my elven spearmen frequently have their spears permastuck in the enemy when the enemy's killed. The said spears are usually very much available from the corpse. In some severe cases, however, the spear is completely lost. The corpse rotting away does not reveal the weapon.

Nethack is the same way, except I'm sure that my tourist's 44 darts don't do 44x the normal damage as one dart.  It's very sad when you try to pry something open with them and break them all at once, though.

Something makes me imagine an "arrowhammer", like a big stack of arrows strapped to a stick thrust through the middle of the stack...

I think I've seen a kitchen implement kind of like that.  A hammer with a bunch of little points on it.  I think it was for crushing nuts? But of course it wouldn't be nearly as combat-effective as a pick, on the same principle that a human can lay down safely on a bed of nails.

Ooo, but something like that used as a hammer might really screw up the bones that it breaks.

This is getting even farther from the point though...

It's a meat tenderizer.

Yeah, we have one of those things in our kitchen too. Nevertheless, if DF were The Ultimate Roguelike and allowed to combine objects, a makeshift "tenderizer" out of a stack of arrows strapped to a wooden stick would make any hammering that much more painful.  :)

"lay down" is key here.
When enough force is applied to either object (dropping from a height), the human dies without a single spike involved.

If you hit things hard enough with an arrowhammer, ity will have more effect then a regular hammer because at first all the force is directed through the spikes, shredding the tissue, clearing the way for the main mass intended to break bones.

We already have arrowhammers in a sense, it's called a macuahuitl(obsidian shortsword in english). Being to make them out of bones/wood would be cool.

In a contest of pure penetration, a pick would win over the "tenderizer", because it's got just one point, and still has the mass to break bones. The arrowhammer causes pain more than anything. The ideal setup is the "doom hammer" from the Severance:Blade of Darkness game, a gigantic maul with either end of it sheared to a point. Maximizes pressure and penetration.
