tiny migration
« on: October 30, 2010, 11:39:50 am »

my first migration in a new fort

TWO DWARVES

a siege operator and a high master
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

we settled as close to the largest goblin empire as possible
my civilization is most definitely not extinct, it there are 8 dwarf civs and all of them are MASSIVE. plus, I chose to be a part of the largest.
oddly enough, there has been basically no wildlife despite the fact that I'm pretty sure we're in a terrifying forest(possibly plain/shrubland, IDR)

this ought to end well...

Expect the next migrant wave to be that small, and then the next to contain at least 30 dwarves.

It happens. I got 3 dwarves on my first wave in my current fortress, then 7 afterwards. Hope the next one is bigger.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

well I just got a 3 dwarf migration wave
at least they brought a cat to kill the vermin plus some tasty livestock

also, it has been raining since the 5th of granite
it is now mid autumn
>_<

so much for the dry season and finally draining the farm areas
time to work with the river...

well, I finally got a 23 migrant wave
so many new recruits and haulers...

This is normal. In your first year, some migrant waves are hard coded in - think of them as stragglers of your original embark party. These dwarves arrive in the first summer and first autumn and the migrant waves are typically small. After that, it's very hard to get migrants in summer and autumn and nobody will ever try to travel in winter. Spring is the time for turning a new leaf in life so that's when all the migrants move out together.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

I knew the first couple were hard coded; I just thought they were hard coded to be more in the 7-8 dwarf range

It's going to depend on alot of factors, but I've had as few as three or four with the first one. Currently, empire size doesnt affect the migration. I've had equal amounts from single fortress kingdoms as from sprawling empires.

your fort isnt wealthy enough. The immigrants might be forced, doesnt mean it has to be any sizable.
