I didn't expect this... (Spoilers)
« on: October 29, 2010, 04:24:56 am »

"Iden Monomsael has been quite content lately. She has been dehydrated lately. She has complained of thirst lately. She has received food recently. She received water recently. She was able to rest and recuperate recently."

The current mayor of Roarcopper hasn't walked in 4 years. At the moment, she's hungry and dehydrated. I thought she might stay that way for some time.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm not quite sure how she escaped the fate her fellow citizens met. Perhaps it's the weird entrance to the hospital. Whatever the cause, the last mobile dwarf was killed about 20 days ago. I figured I'd let things pan out just to see what killed her.

And then...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We've killed 20 demons so far. Of the 20 immigrants who just arrived, the only one with military ability is a
skilled knife user, and that's all he has. I'm sure that this will be fun.
Update:
:o My god. I don't know how this happened, all I know is that over the course of 20 seconds or so, two of the immigrants just became Master and High Master Wrestlers. Does experience gained in combat skills relate to damage done? Because...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Another update: It's over. A final count of 13 new elite wrestlers and 5 more dead demons, but all the immigrants are now dead, and the mayor is alone again. And thirsty.

Final update. It's really over. An elven caravan arrived, but the demons had destroyed the trade depot, so there was nothing to lure them to their doom get them to discover the state of the fortress. And now Iden has finally died of thirst. Goodbye Roarcopper.

If you can punch a demons head off in one go, then you are obviously a High Master at least.

I thought so, but they were only raw recruits. I've even got a flood of messages telling me they're becoming wrestlers and elite wrestlers as their skill levels shoot up. Usually I get I message about them being struck down shortly afterwards though.

This is how my last fortress died kinda. I had this guy (who used to be my mayor) get his spine severed in a hydra attack. The hospital was full up by the time he managed to crawl there, so for some reason he ignored his room and proceeded to drag himself down many more z-levels to the jail, where he rested in one of the cells.
When a massive goblin siege wiped out the rest of my fortress, I locked his door. Damned if the goblins were going to get my last dwarf, a cripple. Maybe the jail was deep enough down so the trolls couldn't path to him? I dunno.
Anyway, a less cool story than op's. He died of dehydration, before the next migrant wave.

Yeah, if you wrestle an FB or a demon, you gain XP fast - I had an entire squad of raw recruits all die as legendary wrestlers after my previous fort got attacked by a flying FB way before I was ready. At least they died happy. Ecstatic even.

Hm, so if you can get a friendless peasant into a closed off area with brewery, farm plot and a bed, the fortress will be (technically) invulnerable?  :P

I figure once they saw her punch the demon's head off they all went "Hurray for the high-master!" so she wouldn't punch them.

Yes, technicly, but why would you ever want to do that? FUN is so much fun.

if you have kept one or two immigrants out and wall them off you might manage to stay alive a few seasons and let the traders fight the demons.

There was a whole thread a while back on working out time-capsule fortresses. Someone suggested taking a few picks so you could leave one up at the surface. Then seal your original seven off underground, leaving the migrants to populate your surface fort. Run two at once!

EDIT: What would happen to the ones sealed away if you abandoned then reclaimed I wonder? I know anything sealed back over is unrevealed....but the stuff like buildings does stay....

The demon probably died so easily because it was made of Brine - beasts made from the hardcoded materials (amber, coral, glass, water, coal, potash, ash, pearlash, lye, mud, vomit, salt, filth, grime) tend to be complete pushovers due to said materials having placeholder values for their physical properties (i.e. [everything_YIELD:10000], [everything_FRACTURE:10000], and [everything_STRAIN_AT_YIELD:0]).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
