« on: January 22, 2008, 06:44:00 am »

I was building a new fortress, aboveground out of stone when I noticed this strange bug

There's a wall below the level, but no floor on the above level.

It doesn't even say "open space" there's just a group of tiles around that area that are blank, and nothing will show in them.

Zip up your save and send it to Toady, he has no idea why this occurs, he might be able to do something with your save.

If it's not even saying "open space", it probably isn't even allocating the blocks, which might be a good lead. It should allocate the sky blocks above the wall when the wall is placed, but maybe something is stopping it from doing that at certain locations or under certain circumstances.

I've also had that problem in my current fortress... but when you lay down 4k stone you'd think there was a good chance of a wall construct bug showing up somewhere in it. You can still build over it though, so it isn't a huge issue at the moment, unlike this give water/food bug I'm experiencing. But thats off topic, so I won't say any more here.

Are the constructed walls muddy?

No.

I've had this problem in almost all constructed fortresses in 33g. On a glacier I had some stairs that I had dug turn into empty spaces that were unwalkable and un-anythingable :/

If you still need it, Toady, I have a save (albeit in a heavily modded copy) that will reproduce the bug. The space above the walls does not display "open space". The bug occurs on all walls built over the same patch of land, continuing vertically up. The walls restore to normal, usually, after being rebuilt, but in this fort, they didn't, once.

If in the save you place a construction and they go off an build it and the floor isn't created, and it always does that, then that would help fix the bug, yeah. Thanks.

Yes, it always happens. I'm mailing the save and my objects folder to you now.
The spot where it happens is the NW corner of the 3x3 tower on top of the entrance, and the tile south of that. You'll have to build a staircase to build on top of the nonexistant floor. Additionally, building the walls over the nonexistant floor allocates the space and creates the floor. It is not a level-dependant allocation problem, it seems, because building a staircase onto the next level before building the walls does not fix the missing floor.

Okay, I've received the save and I've put it in the pile.

Okay, I've found a cause for this and fixed it. It should handle the problem.
