Dwarven medical training
« on: October 26, 2010, 11:14:48 pm »

So. A mention of autopsies in a thread gave me an idea. Medical training by way of dissecting corpses.
Now, this would probably cause less skill gain than operating on live patients, but you can't risk killing someone who's already dead. It'd also cause unhappy thoughts.
Now, the really dwarvenly bit comes from my annoyance at the switch to dead goblins no longer being an asset. The doctors could practice on the bodies of other races, likely for a smaller skill gain, but some. At least enough to stave off skill rust.

The *large serrated steel disk* strikes the Raven in the head, tearing apart the muscle, shattering the skull, and tearing apart the brain!
A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

For a bonus benefit, autopsying enemy civilization corpses should give insight in combat. If you know where the organs are, you generally know where to target!

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Or practice on cut of parts from dwarfs.

Perhaps diffrend training rates for diffrend skills. For example when dealing with death goblins you won't get a lot of skill in diagnostics but they are great for practicing stiches as this is almost identical to training on live dwarfs.
Maybe we could also have max skill gained from this. For example you can only get past level 10 on diagnostics from death goblins as the only training because they are generally all fairly obviously sliced open. And because dwarven diagnostics relies heavily on questions asked to the wounded dwarf(where does it hurt can you do this ext.).
