Alt-key not working in some menu's?
« on: October 25, 2010, 01:27:30 pm »

Hi all,

I'm kinda new to dwarf-fortress. I started playing just three days ago. I use this tutorial to teach me the basics. However, I stumbled upon a problem.
I downloaded the version of DF the tutorial provided, and everything worked fine. However, out of nothing, my key to switch in menu's (like the 'destination' menu, where you can choose 'workshop') stopped working? Yesterday it still worked, and now it doesn't anymore... I use the alt+arrow keys (up and down). I can still move with alt-arrow through the help menu though.
I tried downloading the game again, but this made no difference.

I also found this topic, but changing the key for 'move secondary selector' did not work (I tried several keys).

p.s. I use a laptop, so have no numpad. However, till an hour ago, this was no problem at all...

You say you're using a laptop - are you sure you haven't turned numlock (or its equivalent that puts a numpad in the middle of the keyboard) on/off?

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Thanks for the reply :). I copyed the files to an usb, and tried it on another pc, but still had the same problems. It was a normal pc, with numpad. Neither the arrow keys, nor the numpad worked...
So I'm pretty sure it's not the pc itself. I would say it's Dwarf fortress, but the strange thing is the fact that it does work in the help menu...

Given that you're using an outdated version, I'd say you're unlikely to get much tech support for your problem. I'm guessing that tutorial uses straight 0.28.181.40d - try using 0.28.181.40d19 and see if it works any better (though you'll have to redo all of the custom key bindings since 40d## introduced a completely different configuration format for them).

Well, I found the problem. It was a stupid mistake from my side  :-[ . I was trying to scroll in menu's that couldn't be scrolled (like destination and stockpiles). When I tried other menu's, it did work  :-[

Thanks for the nice help :)
