Floodgates and bridges have a 100 step delay.  Floor hatches have no delay when opening.  Stepping on the pressure plate will cause the floor hatch to open instantly, so the spider won't escape.

You want lots of silk?  All the time?  Here you go:

X = walls
# = fortifications
+ = doors
B = bridge
  = floor
C = cage trap
S = GCS
A = animal*

Code: [Select]
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
X        B#XXX#B        X
X        B#S#A#B        X
X        B#+X+#B        X
X        BXCX XB        X
X        +     +        X
XXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXX

You can drop them in from the level above or use the cage/mechanism method, either way.  The doors needs to be dwarf-passable and NOT pet-passable (in 40d - in 2010, it doesn't seem to matter if they are dwarf-passable or not).  Link the door on the left beneath the bridge should be linked to the bridge on the left, and the right one to the right.

*I like to have 2 GCS and tame one of them, them put them across from each other like that.  They web both sides continually, and you can just close one side or the other to collect webs.  If you only have one GCS, don't tame it, drop a tame animal in the animal spot, and don't bother building the stuff behind the GCS.

With this method, the GCS will always be webbing (poor little animal...), but who cares - the bridge is there to let your dwarves get silk, not protect the expendable animal!

You do have to raise the bridges to form a wall, so the dwarves can collect the goods, right?  I think this is an improvement on what I have, and about the same as what Dorten has, both are pretty good designs.

Anything that involves having to release and re-capture the spider is not such a good idea in my opinion; shouldn't be necessary.

Oddly enough, with my design, Weavers were not scared by GCS.

Dorten's design worked awesomely, and the dwarves are not scared when they rush in here to get silk because they're in and out so quickly. The spider fires silk constantly. The deer is chained up to a platinum chain and the doors are all unlocked but not pet-passable. The floodgate is a failsafe ;)

I wonder if GCS silk is going to be cheaper than sand in later versions.  :)

ive got a nice little farm set up, much different than other farms, but still, onto my question

i happen to have a male GCS and a female GCS, both wild, and i might want to reproduce and have more GCS running around (the next batches ill tame, and probably train)
can a GCS give birth in 31.08?
do the give birth to 6billion eggs like normals spiders? (heh heh) and where do they (if they do) give birth ingame? where the female spider is? the sqaure next to the female? randomly spawned in your meeting hall? (oh lordy please no)

Never - even if enterprising DF players can contrive working systems to harvest unbound quantities, it's still a dangerous task to corral and insert a GCS into the trap.

Any ol' Urist McDumbAss can waltz down to the beach and fill a sack with sand with no danger or preparation.

ive made two farms that will be fully manned, all hours of the day, , forbidden to go outside, will brew there own booze, and grow their own food

I'm quite late to this conversation, but I wanted to throw in that Dorten's version works wonders in the new versions (currently 0.31.16). I have one GCS making more silk than I can even pick up every couple seconds. The weavers have no issues with the GCS causing job cancel spam except when they get hit by a blast of web, but even then they just shake it off and grab a web anyway. Fantastic industry for a fairly small amount of work. One thing to note though, the door holding in the GCS needs to be impassable; just not-pet-passable isn't good enough.

One improvement I will make next time is a way to block off the spider from the bait in case I want to switch it out for something. I'll also probably take it to the next level and make a bridge I can lower to let the GCS shoot at attackers in my main hallway too, but that isn't really related.

Thank you for the wonderful design, Dorten. Really good one.
Now I can really be off to GCS farming and FB catching....
