A few questions from a returning player

So, I have returned to DF after waiting for 0.31 to become more stable. While I have managed to remember and research most things, I still have some questions:

1. The valuable ore and gems are marked with £ and *, right? Or is there some symbol I have forgotten?

2. Does turning invaders off also turn off thieves, ambushes and fun from the depth of the caves?

3. When creating an underground farm, and channel a hole in the roof for watering, will this hole be a source of fun? If yes, will constructing a floor over it prevent this, or can in be broken by invaders?

1. I don't think you have, unless you mean ones dug out.
2. I don't think so. But i've never turned invasions off. You only get your first around 1.2 million fort value (at least I do)
3. floor will prevent fun getting in and can't be broken. It's usually a smart move to plug in cave entries until proper security features can be constructed to the entryway.

Native aluminum is ^ and bismuthinite is %. There are probably other ores that don't use £ but I can't remember any offhand.

I have invaders turned off currently, and I'm in my eight year. No thieves, no ambushes np seiges, and no titans or forgotten beasts so far, although I have only opened the lowest cavern.

I have had invasion off for about 20 years in my last fortress, and nope nothing, no titans, no ambushes, no siges, no thieves. havent had any FB at all either.

Magnetite uses the infinity symbol. Bituminous Coal uses the same symbol as gems do.

1. Not all that is marked with a "*" is valuable. For instance, Cobaltite is a blue "*". But it has no special uses in DF. Some very useful minerals are not marked with those either, so it depends on what you need for your fort. But the most of the standard stuff (ie, native silver ore, gold ore, etc) are.

3. A hole in the ceiling? To the surface? then yes, Fun could fly in. Or dodge in (and suffer fall). Also, a hole going to the surface would turn that tile into outside. If you mean just one z level up for bucket brigading, then the only way fun could get down is if it has access to the hole. If you are underground, they need to get into the access tunnel to fall down the hole. Or be flying around in it.

I've heard turning off invaders turns off everything, but I've never done it so I don't know firsthand if it does or doesn't.
