Slaves To Armok...Goblin Fortress

I recently started a fortress. After giving skills to the members of the embark party, I went to fiddle with the inventory, get some more boo-wait. There isn't any booze or seeds-mostly meat of various kind. And instead of horses and dogs and cats...there were trolls.
I had started a goblin fortress.
I realized why I hadn't been able to choose kobolds (although my expectations turned out to not be DF kobolds... :()-a civ, and therefore a race, was chosen randomly.

Down to busines. I got a couple dozen trolls, some decent weapons, etc. I have a few questions:
1.) Can a trained goblin and a few (dozen) trolls form an effective military?
2.) Why can't my woodcutter cut down trees? I brought a greataxe!
3.) Can I assign trolls to goblins, and if so how?
4.) Is there any other advice I should have?
5.) I'm thinking of posting a log of this fortress. How do I get screenshots, where would I put the log, and would you be interested?
6.) Is it obvious that this is my first fortress?

I just entered the raws and added [CIV_CONTROLLABLE] or whatever the tag is (spelled correctly, of course) to every entity. I would have made goblins and kobolds into adventurer-playable races, but I forgot to...oh, and couldn't find the [ADVENTURE_TIER] tags.

1) No.  This is for a reason I will explain in a bit.
2) Either the goblin in question is too small to wield a greataxe, greataxes can't be used for that, or the goblin doesn't have woodcutting enabled.
3) You could try adding the [TRAINABLE] tag to trolls in the raws.

4)Ok.  This is incredibly important.  You may not get all the different things yet (healthcare, military, farming) and I guess a goblin tower would be good for learning the basics.  However.  EVERYONE alive will seige you.  Dwarves, Elves, Humans.  And your home civ might not send caravans.  Most importantly though, you don't have any nobles.  While most on the forums will tell you that nobles are sacks of wasted dwarfpotential, you do need them for a few important things.  Like expedition leadering.  And bookkeeping.  And brokering.  And managing.  And militia captaining.  Oh yeah, and chief medical dwarfing (though it'd be goblining wouldn't it, heh).  Without the entries for those positions from the dwarf entity, you won't be able to do anything with the military, or know exactly what you have.  To fix it, copypaste the dwarf positions to the bottom of the goblin positions and generate a new world.  I don't think you can fix your current fort.

ok this got me interested, so I've been experimenting (in the name of !!SCIENCE!!, of course..)

In addition to what BackgroundGuy has stated, you also need to change a few more things -

Goblins dont (in vanilla) hve pack animals, meaning they cant actually send out traders, so you may want to add the [PACK_ANIMAL] tag to trolls in the creature_standard raw.

Goblins also lack the ability to perform most tasks (including smelting Iron, etc), so you'll need to copy [PERMITTED_REACTION:*reaction*] lines from the dwarfs to the goblins in the entity_default raw.


In regards to the wood cutting question, I think you might need an actual battle axe to cut down trees, as opposed to any other type of axe

I've heard that modding can mess up save files...think the stuff mentioned might do that?
The goblin has woodcutting enabled, and it would be stupid for goblins to take something they can't use (unless trolls can, maybe...), so I guess I'm stuck with the three wood I got from the wagon until I can get a battleaxe formed. TOADY ONE, IF I'M TYPING LOUD ENOUGH FOR YOU TO HEAR ME, YOU MIGHT WANT TO FIX THIS.
Any way to get the trolls to breed faster until I get a better military?
I think it would be "Chief Medical Goblinning," two n's.
Oh, and BackgroundGuy...HOW DO YOU DO SCREENSHOTS?
And while I'm getting questions out of the way, how would you mod races (kobolds and goblins) to be adventurer-playable?

I think the axe you are talking about is a two handed axe, in the old version you had to enable them to use both hands but I don't know if you have to do that manually here in this version too so you might want to look into that.

Ah, well, I guess as soon as someone tells me how to do screenshots I can start another chapter of dwarven science  (The Goblin Fortress Ustrozogast Unu).

I wouldn't try editing the raws of a saved game - it's always best to back up the main raws, modify them and gen a new world, and if things dont work out, restore the backup, and try again.

Trolls - mine have just been sat there docile for their first season, not really doing anything - will let you know after they've been trained into hunting and war versions.

Adventuring - and the [ADVENTURE_TIER:*] tag to the race in the entity_default raw (where *= an incrimental number - dwarfs=1, Elves=2, Humans=3, Goblins=4, etc)

Axes - Great axes are usable, but I believe they're for military only.

Screenshots - press the "Print Screen" (PrtScr) key on your key board, open an image editing program like Pint, and ctrl+v it into it. Then it's just  matter of uploading it to a host, like so - http://i54.tinypic.com/etglci.jpg

Okay...now to try to do the other suggestions! Then I do the fort, post a log, and delete the world, at which point I'll mess with the raws!
Man, dwarf fortress is complicated.

I don't even need to load the game; I remember they do.
Good; I'd have to abandon if my pets were smashing up every workshop and bit of furniture I had.
Will tame trolls break other civs' stuff?

Well, there are no stuff of other civs to break up is the problem. Even if you embark on top of a human town, the game will consider everything on the map to belong to the player.
