A section of the cavern collapsed right after embarking
« on: October 24, 2010, 06:17:31 am »

Right when I embarked at a location with a brook, a volcano and a decent amount of trees I got the message "A section of the cavern collapsed!". It was about 30 z-levels underground, I don't really understand why it happened. Will it mess something up in the future or can I continue on?

There's really no way to tell for sure without digging down and looking.  Often, this happens when half a pillar in the cavern level overlaps the edge of the map and collapses.  This will slow down your fps for a bit, but doesn't have any long-term effects.

On the other hand, your volcano may have a leak into HFS and be draining, killing your FPS and getting rid of your volcano...

you can continue, caverns collapsing at embark is not uncommon.  It happens fairly often with volcanos too from what i recall, maybe the magma pipe intersects the natural caverns or something.  Basically during the cavern generation some unstable structure has been created which caved in as you unpaused to begin your fort, you may well find the debris when you get down that far (it also gives you an idea of how far your caverns are.)

I wish I had something cool to say about this.  Because it's really cool.

This is a bug. Your first layer of cavern got flooded somewhere by the brook/lava and collapsed(just a part, dont worry...).You can still make this by digging a 7x7 square and flooding it with 7/7 water, it will collapse. And probably make damage to your miner/pickaxe.

This is also commonly caused by a certain piece of the HFS. Dig down and find it for great justice.
