Toady could impose a weight limit when embarking on mountains, to simulate the absence of a wagon (stuff is transported on muleback)

I believe the ability to edit your embark in more detail is being implemented at some point soon(-ish).
i.e., changing the amount fo dwarves you start with etc.

It would be cool if, when you embarked with a low enough amount of weight, the dwarves would forgo the wagon and just put everything on their pack animals. That would let you travel into far less accessible areas.

Or they could use a hot air balloon.

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

I believe I heard in the DFTalks somewhere that someday underground Dwarven roads may be implemented, or maybe it was embarking inside of a cavern. One of those.

Eventually you should be able to embark underneath a mountain, bypassing the limitations of a "realistic" wagon.

If dwarves decided to live in trees like hippies, they'd still do it better than the elves.

Ah. I'd erroneously assumed that they had fallen to their deaths.

You can still embark on edge region mountain tiles, just not ones more than one region tile in.

In fact, I snatched a 3x3 tile with a volcano one tile away from a brook. I had a single square of rocky wasteland that made it perfect.
