The anwser is obvious. The elves impregnated your dog and cat while they were waiting around bored at the trade depot.

I think this is appropriate.

If a merchant caravan enters a map and has a male animal of a species that you have domesticated and running around freely or roped up somewhere (i.e. not sitting in a cage), then there seems to be a microsecond of the male animal being able to spread the spores. I suspect it happens either when the caravan arrives, or when they leave. Probably when it arrives.

+ first, a check if the male animal is present
-> spores flow all over the map and impregnate all that they can
+ next, the check if the male animal is caged
-> no more spores

It's the same when you have the male cows all caged and the females all roped up near the farmer's workshop. And then you have the male cow dragged from the cage to the butcher's workshop for milk production. In that very short time, he'll impregnate all the female cows.

This makes breeding cows for colour or size a bit annoying, because you have to kill the inferiour bulls as calves, or they'll mess up your breeding project.

Lol, that happens when you're editing the posting and not paying attention:

Better now?  ;)
