Deconstructing from the wrong tile
« on: October 22, 2010, 12:37:36 pm »

I've got a row of constructions setup like below.  I need the floors removed, I'm done with them.  The idiot deconstructor stands on the ramp to deconstruct the floor, and will thus get himself stuck.  How do I get it so that the dwarf stands on the other floor tile to the right to deconstruct the one on the left?  I tried setting the ramp as restricted but that didn't work

R - Ramp
F - Floor
X - Up/Down Stairway

Code: [Select]
RFFX

not sure about deconstruction, but if you build something on that floor and then suspend it, dwarves will try to avoid standing there while constructing.  You could try that.

You could also change the order in which you try to deconstruct them, or take out the ramp to remove the temptation.  You can always re-build the ramp later.

The floors were built so that I could access the square where I built the ramp.  Since I'm now done with the ramp I'm trying to remove the floors.

Build two adjacent floors as so:

Code: [Select]
FF
RFFX

Tell the dwarves to deconstruct the first floor.  They'll stand on the ramp to do so, but they won't be trapped because of the extra floor.  You will now have this:

Code: [Select]
FF
R FX

Now deconstruct the leftmost floor.  They won't stand on the ramp since dwarves won't deconstruct from a diagonal space.  You will have the following:

Code: [Select]
  F
R FX

Now you can deconstruct the northmost floor, then the remaining floor.

Building it now, thanks!

It seems they will deconstruct diagonally though, but perhaps they prefer to not if they can help it?

They can't deconstruct diagonally, it's impossible!

Please do the rest of us a favor and make sure your advice is correct, because in this case it's wrong. Had you actually tested this, you'd know that the diagonal restriction only applies to building things - deconstruction is done the same way as mining and wood cutting and can be done from any angle, and they all completely ignore suspended constructions and thus cannot be forced to perform the job from a particular angle.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Oh right, having not played the game for a month or so, I get a little fuzzy on the details, thanks Quietust!

To further clarify, dwarves prefer to perform digging/woodcutting/deconstruction from the west, then east, then north, then south, then northwest, then southwest, then northeast, and finally southeast, in that exact order.
