Questions on Dwarfs
« on: October 21, 2010, 03:33:04 am »

ok i just had a few quiestions on dwarfs... ok if you place a container or cabient in their assigned room will they use it and place things inside of it? same goes for armour stands and weapon racks if your captain has a weapon rack will he place his weapon on it?, if you start build cloths and armour and other clothign objects will dwarfs automatically change there clotheing and stuff?, and just a rondom one but what is the best way to get rid of all that stone when you start digging out a stock pile? cause i dont want to press k then dump all the time :P

d ->b ->d allows you to draw an area where every object will get dumped. It will still take much time and manpower, so I intend to use it only in places where I REALLY don't want any stones (stockpiles, canalworks, this kind of things).
It is still risky since stone will not be the only thing dumped, so it is best used right after the room has been mined out, before putting anything inside it.
I encourage you to explore the d and o menues, there are some real gems there. Like d - b - h, (or how to have a tidy looking fortress even when stones are littered everywhere)

Weapon and armor racks are a little fruity - I have seen a dwarf put equipment into an armor rack exactly one time, and it was surrounded by 9 more pairs of armor and weapon racks (for the entire squad of 10, created as a room and assigned to that squad for use as equipment storage) but I'm not sure why just one guy actually put his gear there and the others did not.  If you hit 't' and move the cursor around, you can examine the contents of any construction including the rock it's made from or other parts, e.g. anvils or mechanisms.

Cabinets -- yes.  Definitely.  You want cabinets.

Coffers/chests would theoretically be used for a dwarf's non-clothing possessions, like coins and amulets and toys and such, after the Economy starts.  Unfortunately, the Economy never starts now, due to bugs.  So, unless you're playing 40d or unless you're playing a future version of 0.31.x where these bugs have been fixed, I don't think there's any need for coffers in regular dwarves' quarters.
