Waterfall mishap
« on: October 22, 2010, 12:10:01 am »

My last embark was to a cold area with a natural waterfall, and I tried to build a little statue garden at the base of it while the river was frozen. When it thawed the waterfall knocked out the floor grates, which drowned several dwarves.

It was set-up like this-
 . . . . .
==== .                  . Empty space
+++= .                  = Wall
###= .                 + Floor
###= .                 # Grate

The water was falling from 3 Z-levels above, and hitting the left side.

Checked the wiki, but I'm still confused about exactly why it happened. And the only idea I had about securing the grates was to bring the garden up a Z-level and use supports. Which wasn't desirable.

So if anyone can tell me why this happened, or give me a bit of advice about supporting floor grates I'd be grateful.

Grates do not support each other, so if you had a grate not touching a floor/wall north south east and west of it, then that would fall through.  That could be your problem, an easy way to fix this is just to make a floor coming to the center of all the grates

Code: [Select]
XXFXX
XXFXX
XXXXX

X=Grate
F=Floor

All I can figure is some of the grates were only supported by ice below them. Grates do not provide support, even to other grates. Every grate needs to touch a floor or wall.

That is, unless the ice actually caused a cave-in. (Which you would have been notified of.)

I'm fairly sure the grates were all touching a supporting tile. A mountain was surrounding the room to the west and south.

By the way, the floor grates ended up in places that seemed odd to me. 3 of them somehow got jammed into the doorway just south of the room. 2 were in the water underneath (in the same tile), and I couldn't even find the 6th one. I was actually thinking the waterfall broke up the floor gates.  Though I'm really inexperienced with waterfalls, and I don't know if it's possible for a one to cause a collapse.

Waterfall, plus freezing temperatures.  Hmm.  Could there have been an ice cave-in?

Didn't notice any messages about a cave-in, and I doubt I would have missed it when I checked the announcements. Still wouldn't say it's out of the question though.
