Embark wagon on flat land
« on: October 08, 2010, 03:13:30 pm »

My suggestion is to place the embark wagon on flat land if possible, rather than as close to the middle as possible regardless of terrain which seems to be how it currently works.  There is no reason why the wagon should end up disintegrated on the side of a peak central to your chosen location when there is plenty of flat land surrounding that peak.  The wagon should be presumed, if possible, to have arrived in some sensible fashion from a boundary of the map, not descended from space ala Lunar Lander.   :D

The forest would usually prevent wagon access entirely. Any goods should be moved on-site with pack animals and unloaded within a few squares. Picking the spot would be nice of course.

In fact, I'd like to see dwarves actually travel to said spot from the map edge, escorted by armed guards that leave after a month or so, taking the redundant beasts of burden with them.

A guard escort might be good for those maps which are immediately hostile and trying to kill you, but I can see it getting abused easily. The default start would include finding a way to murder them all and steal their equipment, basically.

Apparently having a redundant creature entry causes the game to say, "Oh, look, it's crazy world now. Nothing makes sense! Alligators live in houses!"

or shackling them to your entrance as sentient guard dogs

That's the point, it wouldn't be as fun to crush their souls if they didn't have souls to begin with.

escort? How about actually spent points on combat skills and bring those iron armors/weapons instead of 200 barrels of 1 unit of <foo> meat for a change?

There's a lot of valuables in that cart. Even if I equipped the entire team with axes, they'd still be underwhelming in terms of protection.

I'd be fine with coughing up points for it. Not every expedition consists of military professionals.

If your dorf's ambushers skill is his highest, he'd arrive in a free leather amour set, a random metal crossbow and bunches of random metal bolts. For half a price of a battle axe, you get a war dog. As ambusher + doggies is my favourite embark set up, I know for certain that you can embark with up to 30 war dogs (or 60 normal dogs) and still have enough food to last through spring.

While that might technically work, it's also pretty silly. :P

@ slink's suggestion:
Yes. Also not on ice in any but freezing biomes.

Why not, instead, give the user an overview map of the terrain and let them choose their embark location?

Sometimes I'd like to embark on top of the mountain, sometimes I'd prefer to start building at the foot.
