Revealing aquifers
« on: October 19, 2010, 12:44:57 am »

I embarked on a site with a volcano and apparently an aquifer and I don't think there was an aquifer warning but who reads those any way? The aquifer is literally right next to the volcano like if I were to channel away the obsidian wall it would instantly reform so I can start an obsidian farm immediately I just need to be able to reveal the whole aquifer if it doesn't take up the entire z level so it can be safely mined around allowing construction of an obsidian doom fortress .

And if you do unpause, you will die a horrible frame-rate death.

Strange thing is, when I use dfreveal, unpleasant things appear even when I'm cycling through the menus. No unpausing whatsoever.

I use it all the time and never had a problem if I don't unpause.  I think it can hang if you are in designate mode and you end the utility, just be sure you're in default view or run the "unstuck" utility if this happens.

I have noticed that occasionally I'll hit '.' by mistake instead of '>' while scrolling around, which steps forward one frame and triggers all the unpleasant things below that should stay hidden.  The best way to avoid it is to put it in 'k' or 'd' mode before using reveal.  You can also do all your designating while revealed and it'll still be there when you unreveal at the end, which makes it a bit easier.

Yea, but what do the unpleasant things do if they have no way out?

Their second-favourite food (after dwarves) is your Frames Per Second.

It also causes clowns to wander onto the map from the borders of it

It's probably made from baby bone, with a handle of baby leather. Probably uses the leg bones wound together for the handle, the pelvis for the handle/pick joint, and the pick is the spine.

But that's all in theory, of course. Not like I've made a pick out of my own 5 month old baby before.

I can see the potential issues, but can they reach the surface?  If not, it's not really a huge deal, as you can just avoid them.

Also, the 4x4 embark I'm on now has !!6!! buried pillars of blue and a keep.  I didn't know that was possible...

That is a lot of blue, nice haul:)

Im currently on a 6x6 and have maybe 4-5 pillars, only two of which are truly harvestable, the rest go hollow in a hurry :(

On the plus side i found my magma pools in cavern deck #3 so the great pumpstack can begin

Oh, and I have a magma pipe that goes all the way up to the first cavern level.  Early second year magma forges for me <3

It looks like you have at least a partially-misaligned embark, which means you can get more or less blue depending on random chance.  The blue is generated at one per 2x2 aligned to the overall 16x16 grid.  An aligned 4x4 will have exactly four blue; a double-misaligned 4x4 could have as few as one or as many as 9.  One way to think of it is that a misaligned embark has some extra partial 2x2s around the edge(s); that gives you the opportunity for extra blue if the random distribution puts them on your side of the partial, or less blue if the random distribution puts them on the other side of the partial.

A 4x4 has a 1/16 chance of getting the keep, so that plus above-average blue is pretty nice but not that unlikely given the number of embarks DF players crank out.

Yeah.  That's true.  It's still really nice.

I can picture this though:

PXPP
XPXP
PVKX
PPXP

I think I'd wet myself.  Or, nearly so, more likely.

That would be really really nice.

Then again, this isn't entirely unprecedented, because I had a 2x2 with 4 pillars once.
