My pumps are causing flooding.
« on: October 23, 2010, 03:28:45 pm »

Greetings exalted and distinguished fortress leaders.

I am trying to drain a brook by pumping the water upstream, however whenever I start my pumps the land around them begins flooding and my pumpdwarves stop pumping. I've tried channeling out the stream at the out-put end and it's still flooding.

My question is, Is the water just spray or am I causing flooding?

Pumps cause flooding. Period. That's Dwarf Fortress :P

You can solve your problem by building walls along the brook where the water is pumped to... ten tiles should be enough. This way, the water will not flood the land around them and it will drain back into the brook. The most reliable way is to use whater wheels instead of pumpdwarves anyway. Just place them upstream (don't want to pump the water away from the wheels) and connect the with an axle. Digging out the brook is not necessary for the water to drain, IIRC, but of course you need to dig it out for the water wheels and in front of the pumps if you want to build a dam/floodgates there.

Sketch for clarity:

B  ...brook flowing right to left
=> ...pumps pumping left to right
W  ...walls
