My Captain of the Guard is acting as though he's not in the military.

His squad is set to train, everyone but him is doing so. He's hauling things, and his labour screen is white rather than purple like the other military dwarves. What's going on here? It seems to have started at the last season change, he was training before then. I've tried removing him from the squad and redrafting him, no change. Any ideas?

There's a setting for the minimum amount of dwarves per squad to be on-duty military at one time. You can change it somewhere deep in the schedule menu.

Maybe your militia is one dwarf over limit (default is 5 I believe)?

Hmm, no. It's a squad of four, and I've set the schedule to a minimum of 2 dwarves for every month.

Try setting it to four (or more) dwarves if it's a four dwarf squad - see if that activates him.

If it does, then what you're seeing is expected behaviour.

Ah, I see. I'm still fumbling with this new military system, I didn't realize that they go off-duty like that. I assume this is why they were getting angry about long patrol duty when I had the minimum in the squad the same as the total squad number.
