Frozen River
« on: October 17, 2010, 01:24:25 pm »

I've built my first dwarven power chamber :D makes 9000 Urists of power and uses ~1000

It's very nooby and just uses the 'carve fortifications into the wall' trick. Since it runs directly from the river, which freezes, I have no power durring the winter. Will I have to pump magma under the river to keep it warm, or can I just put a floor over the parts I want to stay unfrozen and be done with it?

Unfortunately simply flooring it over won't work. And I'm not sure magma would work either, but I've never tried it my self so I don't know for sure. The only sure fire way I know of to keep water based power systems working during winter on freezing map is by using  self contained dwarven water reactors that are under ground.

I just realized two things. 1. For the Win and F___ the World have the same initials. 2. They have the same meaning in Dwarf Fortress.

Alternatively, wait until the water is flowing again, then turn off temperature.
Only if you're a dirty rotten cheater like me, though.

Magma underneath the river keeps it unfrozen, yes, so that's your best non-cheating way of keeping power.
