He clearly thought better of the prospect of assaulting your fortress and committed suicidesuffered an unfortunate accident.

Perhaps he saw the conditions your dwarves were living in...

In my current (.16) fort the first siege was ~30 goblins and 5-10 trolls.  Once I defeated that, I was attacked 2 seasons later by a siege of 70 goblins, 15 trolls and every one of the goblins was mounted.  The trolls were ripped apart by my new disc traps and the rest of the siege ran away... I haven't seen anything worse than an ambush in a year since.

So yes, sieges can get pretty damn big.
