Spontaneously desintegrating turtle.
« on: January 15, 2008, 02:43:00 pm »

For some realy strange reason, i had 200 turtle(from startup screen) in a stockpile, all underground and inside barrels. Somewhere during my first winter, all of them disapeared at once and replaced themselves with a pile of bones and shells.

The stockpile was in a secluded area so it can't be destroyed by wear and when i last checked them in late autumn, the damage varied from fine to XturtleX at worst because racoons stopped my dwarves from hauling it inside.

Unprepared fish, prepared fish, and meat will decay over time regardless as to whether they are stored indoors or outdoors, or in barrels or on the floor.

Cooked food does not.

Stockpiles should prevent rot. And they didn't rot, the edible parts just disapeared without a trace.

They only prevent rot to prepared food and vegetables, I think.  Meet is going to go bad eventually no matter how well you stockpile it...  they're stockpiles, not modern freezers.

Unprepared fish will always rot, but stockpiles and barrels do prevent rot of meat and prepared fish. Otherwise there'd be no point in bringing meat and fish with you when you start a fortress, because they'd rot before you could eat them.

Except, of course, for the barrels.

They didn't rot.

It wasn't like Turtle[5] -> Rotten Turtle[5]
It went like Turtle[5] -> Turtle bones, Turtle bones, Turtle bones, Turtle bones, Turtle bones, Turtle shell[5]

And i had 200+ of the things so don't tell me my 4 surviving dwarves ate them all at once.

Meat and fish in stockpiles definitely does still go bad (first it gets one x, then two, then...) if left too long.

Still no explaination why they turned to dust in a split second. I checked about 10 game days before i noticed the huge pile of bones in my stockpile. Most of it was fine, a few x and one or two X because stupid haulers were scared by critters before they hauled them inside.

Maybe one of your bad ass dwarfs just processed the entire pile of turtle into something useable only leaving behind the left overs? Check your kitchen and stock menus to see if you have a huge amount of prepared turtle or turtle based meals ;P

It is interesting though, good way to get some shells on hand incase one of your dwarves goes nuts and requires shells to make his artifact.
