Opposition magic
« on: October 12, 2010, 10:02:35 am »

I was thinking that Dwarves get artifacts, why don't humans and goblins have blood magic.  it makes sense -- the gobbos steal the dwarf kids and drain their blood for VERY illicit magic.  The humans have their distateful (but not so much that it is worth a war [usually]) animal blood magic also.

Of course Dwarf blood is the most magical of all -- therefore the snatchers drool over the hope of getting a fresh specimen.  Elf may be next most magical, then human, and finally animal.

No (unmodded) dwarf would perform such distateful rites --thus avoiding the D&D connumdrum of having enemies with magic just makes gives the player toys.

And with modding you can D&D it -- mostly.

There are better places to argue this. Go to one of the many magic threads already in existence.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

I doubt he wants to argue; just presenting an idea. However, there are multiples books worth of magic threads, and it shouldn't be too hard to find the current one.

Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

But what type of effect should these new kinds of magic have? Currently the main use for artifacts is to train a dwarf.

I do not wish to get into the main magic discussion, which  -- at least not yet.  Nor do I wish to specify this magic because there already is a main magic thread.

My main point is that the opposition should have a different magic system than dwarven, and that blood magic makes sense with all the humans carrying around a ton of blood and the goblins capturing sentients.

Furthermore Toady One's artifact and magic discussion http://www.bay12games.com/media/df_talk_7_transcript_2.html is where I want the discussion for artifacts and magic  -- he is asking the questions I'd like him to ask for my sake.  Therefore I feel the opposition magic will have the corresponding questions and any additional advice would be superflous and maybe even distracting.

I do however want an artifact to be more powerful than opposition magic over the long run
sorry if the emphasis gets annoying, just trying to distill my point.  [you have made a crummy point beverage [100] worth 1 dwarfbuck]

Ah. I see the distinction where I did not before.

I disagree that Dwarven artifact magic should overpower the magic of the other races over any term, nor do I agree that races should have particular magical types. For the purposes of fortress, sure, maybe artifacts would be the standard, but every civ (or site, even) on a given world that isn't yours should be able to determine it's own magical type. Perhaps this might be biased (as dictated by the raws), but I see no reason to say humans do -foo-, but all goblins do -foo2-.

Also, the more different types of magic you put in, the easier it is to mod your dwarf fortress to use a different kind of magic if so choose. Oh, won't SOMEBODY think of the modders?

Actually it might make sense for gobbos to do -foo2-

They are often demon lead/have contact with them remember, and demons in particular might have much more different magics.

Zeblo, true, but if they don't have a demon leader, I see no reason for them to automatically do -foo2- just because all the demon-led ones do.

My main point is that the opposition should have a different magic system than dwarven, and that blood magic makes sense with all the humans carrying around a ton of blood and the goblins capturing sentients.
Not only that, but the other magic threads went into the detail of a procedurally generated magic system for every world. They spoke of how there would be a setting for mysterious magic versus Vancian magic (Like the other 1-100 worldgen settings), and of how symbolism would be used for determining a lot of magic. So that any race could have blood magic if their symbols were related to it. And since the magic stuff is a long way into the future, we'll probably have for more complex civilizations and races to add these magic effects too.
This entire subject has been trodden down to the bedrock; go res' one of the other threads!

Edit: And since you haven't realized; goblins steal children to bolster their own numbers. The harsh conditions in their towers allow any member to die equally, leading to a decline in the goblin race but and very strong goblin culture.
