Custom workshop building purely for looks?
« on: March 21, 2011, 09:19:51 am »

First, please see this: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=80169.0.

Notice all the detail that game puts into its walls, floors etc. We only have smoothed, engraved and blocked for such designations.

Do you think I could make several 1 tile wide custom workshops to place along walls to look like the pillars, grooves, geometric patterns, raised floors, small fences (stone), small stairs, different patterned walls, and other stuff in those game pictures?

Issues:

1.) Value: I'm not sure if workshops have value or if the material you make them out of matters, but there's something to think about when designing rooms with custom walls made out of custom workshops.

2.) Coding: I'm uncertain how to make custom workshops look how I want them to. Is there a guide or someone who can detail the process (Honestly I'm surprised there isn't a big page in the wiki about this)?

Very possible.  You can make them any size you want, like the 5x5 kennels and siege workshop.  You can make them pass-able or make them solid, like statues, and selectively decide which tiles can be walked over.  The only thing you can't control, is making the color the same as the material.  You define a fixed color, and it will be that color regardless.  These can also be destroyed by building destroyers, which is good or bad depending on how you view it.  Look up the custom workshop raw for the soap maker, and a few others in .21, and see some examples.  There's also a utility out there for drawing workshops, but it uses the default tileset, not any graphics you're using.  Still, should be easy enough to compare the default against your graphics.

Somewhat incorrect! You can use MAT in the place of the colour triple in the building description and it will use the mat colour of the first thing in the building's list. :D

Orly?  I wasn't aware of this!  I may have to add flashy pillars and wall types then!
