Pond filling task bug? "Water source disappeared"

"Water source disappeared"

What does that mean? They're filling a pond from an underground pool (not murky; the exposed water 2X 5 source has 7/7 tiles).

Also it took a while for them to realize that I've channeled out and exposed the water source. After a bit they started filling the pond but that error appeared from time to time (even though the "7" in the tiles didn't budge, indicating they were probably getting water from an underground river or a large body of water).

Make sure they aren't taking from the pond they're filling.  They'll get that error when they go to get that 1/7 tile and it dries up.

I've designated the 7/7 pool as the "water source" and made a "pond zone" right beside it.

They were filling it alright. Maybe I've accidentally designated the "source" as a "pond" too? Is that possible?

You need to hit (o) and somewhere in there, can't remember where sorry, you can set them to ONLY take from the designated water source.

Ah so dwarves can still be ordered to put water into a water source? Odd.

Thanks! I'll fiddle around when I get home.

Well, they'll get water for the pond at the nearest water source.  Which might be the pond you're filling unless you restrict them to the water source you want.

But if you set one as the "source" and the other as the "pond", shouldn't they be getting water jsut from the source? Anyway, I'll try fiddling around later. Thanks!

You have three options in releation to stuff like water soruces and fishing zones: only use designated, prefer designated, use any.

If you are filling a 2x1 water pond, dwarves will go to THE OTHER TILE of the pond you are filling to get water to put into the pond. That is, they recognize that they shouldn't get water out of the place they are filling, but they don't recognize the connected tile as part of what they are filling. So they will pull water out of that ADDITIONAL tile to pour into the tile they are trying to fill.

To stop that, you really need to create a water source, and limit them to only use that during the filling process.

How? I must have missed something as I don't remember any menu giving me those options.

In the orders menu ('o').

I solved this. I think it was due to my water source being too narrow (2x6). I made a bigger water source this time (channeling an 8X8 area) and the dwarves filled up multiple ponds without a hitch.
