I like setting up the fort, planning the farming and food production lines, and a bit of getting the economics rolling out production of stuff. Once the fort can clean out the caravans I begin to lose interest (2-3 years).

Bying out caravans is easy.

The very early game. Sadly I find that my population grows too quickly and time passes too quickly. Also, sometime after 20 dwarves it becomes impossibly tedious to micromanage everyone. It's actually worse now with skill rust than it was back in 40D where I could just make everyone decent at everything. And I need a faster way to check my dwarves for potential conscripts (good attributes, male).

Any flux sedimentary stone layer makes this very, very easy.

I got very unlucky once, and didn't have a single coal vein on a 4x4 embark.  It was surreal.  I mined out like 80% of the layers and nothing.

I used to have an avatar, but I was told to remove it after it kept making people go insane.

Mind = blown.
Unless your talking about 40d, in that case I can understand, or if the layers you embarked never have coal.

Whenever my FPS is high.
I have to say this too. My FPS usually goes to 1 and there goes the will to play the site. Anything above 20 is still joyous gameplay.

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

Any time when I have no idlers and nobody is hauling anything. Ahh, efficiency.

Also, killing caravans for next to no reason.

I'm entertaining the thought of trying to survive with just my 7 initial dwarves on my next go.
