I may have given you bad instruction there.  I always assumed the reserve options were in there but I've never used them and I can't find them now.  I think I'm gonna bow out before I make more of an ass of myself XD

I'm really quite stumped what could be causing this.

edit:  I just didn't see the reserve settings in there; turns out I never knew where they were.

If memory serves, pressing q, navigating the mouse to the stockpile, and pressing "s" takes you to the settings menu for that stockpile. I could be wrong though. If I'm right then Jake also is.

yeah I tried that, all I saw that I didn't notice before was in the bottom right corner of the settings menu:
u: Sand bag

I don't know what function that serves, but it was grayed out on the stockpile.  I think I'm just going to delete all my stockpiles and redo them, maybe that will fix it.  Can't continue the way it's going now, because I've got plump helmets withering on my farm plots now.

meh somehow my game is all hosed up.  the dorfs are now putting food barrels (barrels with food in them) in the "furniture only" pile. I'm not sure what's happening.

Edit: Just for the record I'm really @#$%ing pissed right now.  I've spent hours and hours making this fort and now it's falling apart.

If re-applying stockpiles doesnt help, then you've messed up a preference somewhere. Check things like the orders menu, make sure dwarves are set to gather food, check you havent reserved your barrels (just press p, its the base stockpile menu screen), check you havent somehow forbid them all in the stocks screen, and so on.

If your dwarves are putting food in the furniture stockpile, then it sounds like you're messing around with custom stockpiles and/or stockpile settings. If you have been, you probably forgot to clear old data out each time you put down a new one, and re-applying core stockpiles will work.

(just press p, its the base stockpile menu screen)
This is becoming a familiar refrain, but how the hell did I miss that?  :/
Thank you, sir.

I've seen this happening as an intermediate step, filled barrels traveled on eventually.
although if there's no appropriate (for everything that's in the barrel) free stockpile space (because it's clumped up with single plump helmets) they will just sit there.
also, if you're not already doing it: it pays also to have specialised food stockpiles for every kind of food (i.e. only prepared meals/ plants/ drinks/ meat/ a.s.o.) and the [q]->stockpile->[t] 'take from pile' allows you to influence a little the stream of 'move x to stockpile'-jobs between stockpiles.

on another note, I've often seen dwarves putting an empty barrel/bin on a stockpile if there's none present.

u:sandbag is completely inconsequential until you start having fun with the glass industry, it turns the storage of bags filled with sand on/off, which can be made only if there's sand on your map by a (magma)kiln-job 'gather sand' and crucial to produce green/clear glass.

In my forts, the only thing that gets stored in barrels is booze.  I intentionally disable barrels on the raw foods stockpile and prepared meals so that all the free barrels are available for holding boose and syrup.  Yes, you need to have a huge raw foods stockpile, but if you have a soil layer that is really not a big deal, and it gives your miners something to practice on.

The stockpile reserve bins/barrels are RIGHT ON THE (q) screen. Bin reservation numbers are controlled by cvCV, and Barrel reservations numbers are controlled by erER. Make sure your food stockpile doesn't have max bins and no barrels in it. This happens when you change stockpile types (ie, it was a cloth stockpile, then you changed it to a food stockpile).

What normally happens with food: If you get a MASSIVE amount of food suddenly (ie, Caravan trade), the individual food items are moved to any available empty food stockpile setting. Then dwarves will stuff a food item into and empty barrel. If they aren't interrupted, they will bring that barrel to the stockpile. If they are interrupted, they'll leave the barrel wherever it is. At that point, dwarves will start piling matching food into the barrel. Those matching items can be from the items lieing on the stockpile floor, or be from the source. Eventually, given enough time, the barrel will be placed in the food stockpile it now "belongs" to.

so it seems after a good long while they've started moving barrels back onto the foodpile.  I deleted and re-made all my related stockpiles.

Wish I knew what happened so I could prevent it again.

To answer some people, yeah I've had my dorfs add empty bins and barrels to things like finished goods stockpiles or armor stockpiles, even though there was nothing in them.  Every time I messed with the stockpiles I deleted the old pile instructions and made brand new ones.  There have been multiple times where there was a foodpile that had an empty tile on it and food was just thrown on the floor while empty barrels were available.  And I never accidentally reserved any barrels, I checked.  I don't even know how to do that.  Don't know what keys (cvCV) or (erER) refer to.

Now that I think about it, there were several times where I made, for example, a "general" foodpile, then changed the settings of it to only accept brewable plants.  Maybe that was the cause...

Just to clarify, the above information is NOT the Reserve Barrels/Reserve Bins function.  It does describe a very useful function for individual stockpiles, the Max Barrel/Max Bin function.  I use it specifically to allow NO barrels on my prepared food stockpile, for example.  Or to allow no bins in your ammo stockpile if you don't want to.

Reserve Barrels/Reserve Bins can be found by pressing "p" (the stockpile command).  You'll see it about 2/3 down the screen.  Reserving barrels allows you to set a certain number of barrels NOT to be used for storage so that you'll have some available for other purposes (like booze production).  I have no idea what purpose reserving bins has.

Those are simply (c), (v), (shift-C), etc.
