Taming exotics
« on: October 08, 2010, 06:09:35 pm »

From what I understand from searching the forum the dungeon master for taming exotics is kinda buggy.

I want to tame a number of critters on my map that are exotic tagged.  I entered the raws, found the animals i want (namely deer, groundhog, cougar).

Cougar and groundhog had the pet_exotic tag which i changed to pet and saved.  deer didnt appear to have any pet tag at all so i added [pet].

My animal trainers still cant tame em at the kennels.  tame small animal returns 'no tamable small animal', the tame large animal list contains not entries.

Any ideas why this hasnt worked?  I thought maybe because the deer and groundhogs were caged before the changes those individuals might have the older tag, however reesus macaques which i also changed the tag of have since been captured and i still cant get it to work.

The critters im trying to tame are in cages in the animal stockpile...do they need to be in a built cage somewhere?  Pretty sure i tried this but never know...might be that simple.

Do i have to gen an entire new world with the altered raws before they will become tamable?

I wish I had something cool to say about this.  Because it's really cool.

Did you edit the raws in the general raws folder, or the ones in your save game folder?  You need to edit your save game folder to have the change take effect in an already started game.

^ That.

Or, in the same general area. Edit the raws for nobles and add the ability to tame exotics to a position you already have. Makes life easier if you discover new ones in future.

Instead of going around replacing all the raws, I think you can just run df_savegameupdater.bat, or whatever it's called.

Also worth noting, "small animal" refers to vermin. They might be worth keeping and taming if you have dwarves that get a big kick out of roaches and lungfish, but otherwise no.

yup edited general raws not save game...thanks folks.  also good hint on editing noble positions, feels much less abusive to just appoint someone as the long-absent dungeon master:p

I just checked all of the official release files for 0.31.16 (Windows SDL, Windows SDL nomusic, Windows Legacy, Windows Legacy no-music, and even Linux and MacOS) and there is no df_savegameupdater.bat file. I don't know where people are seeing this file, but I'm guessing it's probably in an unofficial third-party packaged version of the game (i.e. one that has some included tileset).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I think it comes with the Phobeus tileset.

Funtimes:

Anything more specific on getting a noble set up for the dungeon master role?  i found TAME_EXOTIC and put it on the expedition leader as a test but it didnt do the trick, does it require more complex alteration?  perhaps make dungeon master appointed by exp leader rather than an outside agent?

Direct editing of the creature raws worked when i made the changes in my save game folder...just intrigued

Doesn't work for entities. You'll need a new gen, or use one of the tools that supports editing saves.

I've created a "Dungeon Keeper" which was based off of the Higher Learning mod's Librarian noble(which is immediately appointable as soon as you start your fort, but serves no actual purpose), but added in the Dungeon Master's "[RESPONSIBILITY:TAME_EXOTICS] or whatever the specific tag was, and it didn't change anything, i still couldn't tame captured foxes or cougars or anything else special. So, either the actual dungeon master is also bugged(and would be a perfectly good reason to temporarily remove his arrival) and wouldn't let you tame exotics, or something is hard-coded about the dungeon master beyond anything we can see in the raws for him and he's the only way to do it.
