"Indoor" Fishery?

I had notion to see how well fishing could be used to keep my dwarves indoors for bones/fish while sustaining a robust fishing industry. However, the wiki is fairly vague on the mechanics of depletion in a region.

Is it just a given (and possibly variable) number of fish per season/year, or can you manipulate water sources to increase the rate of repopulation and "farm" fish? Does digging several connected (or separate) canals or channeled ponds actually create a new region that can have fish, or just allow access to one global pool of fish from the area?

I have no idea how to try to manipulate fish availability, but I can tell you for sure that different water sources will return different fish, and they appear to have separate availability.  E.g. a river might have eels but pools on the same map might have turtles, and salt water ocean might have different fish again.  You'll have fishers out and get the message "there are no fish in the central swamps" or the like, but other sources still supply fish if you follow the fisher(s) around.

My theory is that each embark square is in itself probably divided up into another 4 invisible quadrants. So I do believe that if you were able to get water into each of these quadrants they would count as separate fishing zones. Having said that though, I've sealed off a small section of a brook which I've designated as my fishing zone with 1 fisherman and my 2x10x10 stockpiles are full of fish and I only rarely see the message that the fiver is out of fish. I believe I read that fish get repopulated every new season.
