Normal Evil vs. Undead Evil

I was wondering if anyone had an idea of how to figure out whether a site is "normal" evil or undead evil.  I've heard some ideas that Haunted regions are more likely to be undead and that Terrifying is often regular evil, but I wanted to see if anyone had some more concrete suggestions either way.

I used to think the red/gray evil was undead and the pink/purple normal, but that doesn't seem to be the case.  For my next fort I want to settle in a full-blown dead landscape so some guidance would be much appreciated.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

I am not certain but fairly confident that if you see glumprongs(dead looking purple trees) you will *not* see undead at all, and that terrifying gives zombies only with rare living creatures while haunted gives only skeletal undead with rare living creatures.

I have no experience with sinister aside from a 50 second embark where about 15 beak dogs spawned and steamrolled my starting 7 dwarves.

Ah, see, my current fort does have glumprongs...but undead wildlife.  No skeletal wildlife, either, which makes it a little weird.  And of them, it's pretty much just zombie rhesus macaques and zombie groundhogs (along with various zombie underground crap).

That was what made it strange to me.

If you're only getting groundhogs and small monkeys, low Savagery is probably holding you back.

Maybe if we beg the Great and Powerful Toad he will enlighten us on what Grey, Red, Pink, Purple, Sinister, Terrifying, and Haunted actually mean?

I would love to find more embarks with Glumprong, lots of evil live critters, high savagery.

Sinister = Low Savagery, High Evil
Haunted = Medium Savagery, High Evil
Terrifying =  High Savagery, High Evil

Out of the three, Sinister is the most accommodating. Savagery is a reference to the amount of wild animals in the near by region and the variates they come in. So... I would expect to see undead eagles in terrifying and perhaps beak dogs or slightly less intimidating animals in sinister. I believe that anywhere that is marked with Evil will have some sort of undead, although I could be wrong, as I remember embarking in a sinister area that looked entirely benign... Aside from a pack of undead hippos.

As for the coloring... I'm not sure. Probably just the terrain type.

Purple vs red/gray is just for different biomes.

I figured that was the case, especially after a gray forest ended up being pretty much normal aside from a few harpies.

Part of the confusion is probably in the names, too.  Sinister and terrifying just sound incredibly harsh and dangerous whereas haunted sounds like it's, well, haunted.
