White tie and cumberbunds
« on: October 08, 2010, 03:21:46 am »

In about a week, I'll be going to a white tie event, and I want to wear a cumberbund. Although a white cumberbund would be the best option, I am having trouble finding a white cumberbund. My query is therefore:

With white tie dress, is a black cumberbund preferable to no cumberbund?

I've never seen a cumberbund worn with white tie; cumberbunds are a little informal.   A waistcoat is what you want.

edit:  If you're married to the 'bund, though, it needs to match the tie.  I don't know if this is serious business or not, and that would dictate how much it actually matters.

cumberbunds are a little informal
This is a statement that I never thought I would read.

"Informal for white tie" is a category that includes damn near every piece of clothing on the planet.  (For men, women have tons of choice.)

Has to be white. Also, you better have a top hat.

A google image search shows that wearing white tie with a cumberbund is the norm, or at least close enough for it to be acceptable. Example

Has to be white. Also, you better have a top hat.
I can't wear a top hat - It's my university matriculation, so I have a special hat for that.

and by "it has to be white", do you mean that no cumberbund is preferable to a black cumberbund?

Also, would it be good or bad to wear a pair of gloves like This?

White tie is a very exact outfit and cumberbunds are not part of it.  I don't see why you wouldn't be able to get away with it there, though.  Either way, cumberbunds and waistcoats always match the tie.*

Not too many folks wear gloves like that anymore, but it's certainly not unheard of.

*Those red cumberbunds are the only exception I know of, and you definitely can't wear those with white tie.

Are you trying to look like a guest, or the waiter?

It's cummerbund, and you never wear a cummerbund with white tie. White tie requires a waistcoat, and cummerbunds and waistcoats are mutually exclusive.
