Haulers or Soldier?

Hi all. I have been again plagued by a ton of migrants that arrive with virtually no useful skill at all.
(and yes I'm looking at you, Adaquate Animal Caretaker.)

So what do you do to them?
 Hauling?
 Block making?
 Smoothing and (eventually) engraving?
 Or career as a soldier?
 Temporary amusement? (till the fat burns off)

 Wanna hear everyone's thoughts on this matter.

I'd like the idea of burning them until al the fat is spent. then survivors could become super elite fireproof soldiers (just add water)

Generally, for every ten migrants, five become haulers, one becomes an engraver, two become soldiers, and two get trained up in masonry and mechanics.

Why choose between hauler and soldier? set up their schedual so they can be a soldier part of the time and a hauler part of the time.

Converted into other labors on a fortress needs-basis. I want to start up a glass industry? Ashery/kiln/glass furnace workers. FB killed half my military? All new recruits. Starting a mega project? Stone/woodworkers and miners.

So what? It's not like most of us run forts in a way that actually allows moods to go very sour until the overwhelmingly bad effect of friends dieing hits the fan.

The dwarf war-machine requires fresh blood! Isolate them from the rest of the fort and train them as you please. When goblins breach the entrance, let them loose!

I skim their profiles.  Good physical stats?  Army.  Mason/mechanics are always good.  I try to screen potential engravers for their tastes--no point in training the bastard up if they like rats and spiders and giant roaches and scribble vermin all over the walls.

Useful preferences, like steel/adamantine + weapon/armor type?  Have them make copper junk, then send them off to haul.  Anyone who likes a nifty exotic weapon gets bumped to the front of the training cue.  (C'mon, platinum whip!)

Also worth checking for potential baron candidates...  Find someone who likes microcline, copper, green glass, dog leather and bags, and never worry about mandates ever again.
