There is also an interesting option with military, burrows and schedule:

1.Create your hunting burrow, which if your military is well-equipped can be underground.
2.Create a squad of 2 or 3 half-military dwarves.
3.Give them year-round schedule to "defend my_hunting_burrow, 1 minimum".

Military dwarves will go and try to kill everything that may pose a tiniest threat leaving mutilated corpses in their path. Crossbows are safest but slowest to kill (a bolt to a limb is not closing an animal's death by much and trips to restock take precious time), edged weapons kill fastest but may leave additional hauling jobs for severed limbs, blunt weapons provide cleanest results but slow and may be dangerous because of this.

Other than poisoned bytes to fingers from GCSs nothing in the upper 3 caverns could kill a moderately trained metal armor wearing recruits (and it is a quick way to train them). Crundle meat and bones are not very efficient but there are lots of crundles.

A larger squad schedule may be organized to have 2-3 dwarves always training, 3-4 relaxing off-schedule, 2-3 patrolling main entrance and 1-2 hunting in broad area.
