Dwarves Wearing Rags
« on: October 02, 2010, 01:59:07 am »

My dwarves never seem to replace thier equipment after its in shreds. I recently noticed that nearly half of my 180 dwarves are all wearing clothing described as being 'in tatters' and listed with XX<itemname>XX.

This is depite the fact that I regularly craft cloth, silk, and leather clothing on a routine bases. I have enough that I sell it routinely to the caravans that come through. Why aren't my dwarves getting new gear, and what can I do about it without going through each dwarf and forbidding his clothes?

Didn't you know?  Dwarfs are all bleeding nudists.

Seriously though, all the advice I've heard on the subject is, "Ignore it, doesn't matter anyway."

I don't know about .31 but earlier they used to get unhappy thoughts. This was remedied by making clothes, and making sure they have a cabinet and coffer in their bedroom. They would store the new clothes there, but never wear them.

I have no idea if this is still the case, but they surely don't equip new clothes.

This is a feature, not a bug, correct?
You're playing Dwarf Fortress.  There isn't much of a distinction.

Does XXtatteredXX have less armor value than new clothes? Ordinary clothes seem capable of deflecting attacks that would otherwise hurt.

AFAIK, they dont get unhappy thoughts from wearing rags. At least, none of my dwarves have complained of such.

Not that it would matter if they did. My fortress is so ridiculously lucrative that they're all so ecstatic that even when their friends die and thier pets are murdered, they only become happy.

XX gives less defense then xX or x or normal. Since dwarves refuse to change clothes, you can solve the problem by drafting them into military on CIV alert and give them hard armour set to replace clothies. Alternatively, give [HARD] tag to anything you wish to wear.

It's a bug to my knowledge. Dwarves ought to be replacing their clothes when they get worn out, but they don't. Still, it's only one bad thought when they become nude and then they don't care.

They're not nude: They have beards.

okay, so if dwarves replace their tattered clothes with new ones, to they retain ownership over the old clothes? ideally if they didn't the old clothes could be dumped or destroyed.  Otherwise I imagine the tattered clothes would just pile up in cabinents perpetually.

Honestly, I wouldn't care about this so much, except for the armor provided by the clothes being lost...
specially when cleaning in an active danger room, a full set of normal clothes can go a long way to preventing a tantrum spiral, ala
Urist Mcundertaker gets himself killed trying to grab a dead cat in my danger room
Urist McHauler gets himself killed trying to grab Mcundertaker
Urist McCleaner gets himself killed trying to clean out the room and so on so forth

Placing dwarves in the military, even in an inactive squad, can make them wear clothes.
