Is it possible to change what my dwarves train in?
« on: October 03, 2010, 01:54:46 pm »

I started training a tiny military just now but I've got an annoying issue. They refuse to actually learn weapon skills. I've armed them with axes, yet all they do is watch demonstrations of dodging and fighting that one of them is doing (he came to my fortress skilled in a few combat skills). It's been going on for a while and they don't seem to be showing any sign of bothering to learn how to use their weapons, so it seems pretty likely they'll be horribly butchered once some enemies show up. Is there anything I can do about this?

So, I tediously awaited the arrival of the dwarven caravan (I'm set up on a island, see)... And, they came. My fingers tingled, my nose twitched and my toes tickled... they came around the corner, over my bridge... Into my courtyard... Onto my trade depot...

Then everything near it exploded in a cloud of blood.

Use smaller squads and make a Danger Room. A Danger Room being a room with spike traps armed with 1 wooden training spear each, every trap attached to a single lever, a cabinet in the middle of the room. Set the Cabinet as a barracks for training, have someone repeatedly pull the level, I suggest doing with without shields first since with shields slows the rate at which they get their weapon skill.

Wait, stabbing them repeatedly will increase their weapon skill?

It's becouse they train their weapon skill by useing the weapon to deflect the wooden training spears.

Oh, alright. I'll try that.

EDIT: One question, though. My carpenter is currently extremely skilled so the spears are turning out mostly exceptional and masterwork. I know they're just wood, but because of the really high quality is there a risk of serious injury? Would it be better to get some random person with no skill to make them?

Yes.

Masterwork/Exceptional spears could cause some damage.

With [SLOW_LEARNER], dwarves probably don't sit around and talk anymore. They just stand in the same corner altogether, staring at each other, sticking their bearded lips out trying to make sounds. And giggling when someone actually says a whole word.

Remember to use "Wooden training spears"

They do less damage

Wow. Just... wow. About a year of training by themselves got my dwarves to, at highest, Competent in axe use. About 45 seconds real time of using a danger room has gotten one of them to Talented.

EDIT: Damn it, one of them is being a coward and sitting on the cabinet. Hopefully he'll move off soon, he's now the weakest by far. He's only competent while my other two are already at adept.

It took about a season in-game for me to get someone who had never used an axe in their life to legendary 1. Then his pet cat wandered into the danger room and died, he was still happy so i said screw it and made him my new militia captain
