This is all great stuff, and I'm keeping it all in mind for expanding the wall... for now I'm going to go with my original idea, with a gatehouse and towers at the corners (which may be expanded beyond the wall to allow for siege weapons firing along the wall).  I don't have the room for anything snazzy, so I'm going with a rectangular wall.  Completely made of jet, with orthoclaise statues topping it.  Also adding the suspended walkway for marksdwarfs.

A magma-filled trench and secondary wall may be phase 2.  You guys are really inspiring me.

Make sure the magma moat is NOT filled to the brim; have AT LEAST one full z-level devoid of fluids. This is because any creature capable of swimming in that fluid (for example, dragons can swim in magma) can get in and out with impunity. With an empty z-level, however, the creatures can't path in and out of the liquid.

This is why some DF players would argue that a dry moat is safer than a filled one. Although, of course, dry moats don't look so cool... :D

I meant for the outer wall to have fortifications carved in them (or what ever carves holes in them) so the magma would flow to the outside world.
