You must give this shield to whichever military dwarf ends up with legendary in shield first, a reward for being awesome. If only someone could somehow get an entire suit of arifact steel, bronze, or adamantine armor, helm boots gloves chestplate etc., and put it all on one soldier, with an artifact weapon they are legendary in of a matching materal to the armor, or platnium if they are a hammerdwarf.

I haven't gotten an artifact in so long (I tend to abandon forts about the same time SKil Rust kicks in, as a reference to how long they last), but I still remember my best all the way back in 40d.

I never get good artifacts. I always get something like a microcline grate with a picture of a rhesus macaque or something equally ridiculous.

Ok, my lead dwarf is now wielding Ekirosust, "lucidtamed", a pig iron spear

Along with the afore mentioned werewolf shield.
He is also wearing full plate steel armour.

My favorite artifact was my gold warhammer with menacing spikes of gold. It had my first artifact, a maple ring (:l) etched into it in gold.

I would literally kill every one of my own dwarves to get one of these.

I've got a buzzard leather buckler with a picture of a bismuth mace on it.  Not too useful.  But then I got an artifact steel pick with a picture of itself in obsidian on it.  I expect it to be brutal in combat.
