How many dwarves can I fit in this laptop?
« on: September 27, 2010, 10:24:11 pm »

ASUS UL30A-X5K Thin and Light 13.3-Inch Laptop

1.3GHz Intel SU7300 Core 2 Duo Processor
4GB of DDR3 RAM, 2 slots, 4GB Max
500GB SATA Hard Drive (5400 RPM); No optical drive
13.3" HD LED Display, Intel GMA 4500MHD, Wi-Fi 802.11 bgn, 0.3M Webcam
Windows 7 Home Premium Operating System (64 bit); up to 12 hours of battery life

Basically, I am a writer looking for a portable laptop on which I can play Dwarf Fortress.

Hows that for an obnoxious first post?

Well let's see... a single dwarf takes up around 50KB.
I'll give your operating system 15GB to work with, so you can fit 485*1,024*1,024/50 = 10,171,187.2 dwarves on your laptop.
How's that for an obnoxious reply to an obnoxious first post?

Answer for your actual question: You'll probably be able to play with ~60 dwarves and still have a manageable framerate (5-15 FPS).

By the way, welcome to the forums. Don't let the ToonyMan bite.

1.3GHz? Dwarf Fortress isn't going to like your laptop.

2x2 embark. Trust me on this. There's a mod somewhere out there that allows 1x1; you might want to use it.

1.3GHz... yeah... I'd say ~60 dwarves and 5-15 fps is a realistic estimate.

Well if you turn temp off, and maybe weather, limit your embarks to not much more than 12 embark squares, and avoid too much flowing water, you should be fine for up to 80 dwarves I would say.

All depends on your expectations really. Some people (clearly spoilt :) ) claim the game is unplayable at below 50 FPS. I find the game unplayable at below 10 FPS, but by keeping to the limits above, I don't normally sink below 15 (maybe if I accidentally cave in half a mountain or whatever), and my laptop sucks ass:

Intel Celeron 1.4GHz process, 512MB RAM, XP, integrated graphics card.

However, I think you should consider what effect installing DF on your laptop might have on your work output. Difficult to write and play at the same time I should imagine :)

/Yeah, I should buy some more ram, I know.

DF is only unplayable below FPS 5.  Which I never really hit yet because I usually end up getting bored and flaming everything with magma.

Laptop: Sony Vaio
Intel Core i7 Q740 @ 1.73GHz
6GB DDR3
Some NVIDIA GeForce card or another.

Maybe one dwarf, if you make a very concentrated dwarf paste.

Do you have any particular objections to using a remote app and running DF on your main PC? That would be significantly less painful if you had a reasonable wireless connection, and slightly less painful on a bad one.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

New question! If I were to remove elves [INTELLIGENT] tag in the raws, would it work?
