how do I get a trade broker?

every other game I've played(note this is before the most recent build) ive started off with a dwarf that could trade/price things with caravans...this game no such luck. what gives?

You'll need to appoint a broker, preferably one with the appraise skill.  Go to the nobles screen with n, then assign a dwarf to the broker job.

And if they're not trained in appraise, no worries.  You'll skill up quickly with the first caravan that comes your way.
