Possible crash with down staircase building?

I have a channel with an up staircase in it.  There is no way to get into the channel, as I had removed the down staircase for whatever reason.  So I tried to build a down staircase where the up staircase is and then switched windows.  A bit later, the game crashed.  Could just be a random crash, perhaps, and when I get the motivation to play again I'll test it one more time.
