I have no clue what these are, why they're there, or what they mean.

I regularly see "REC" in all red, and a bunch of other stuff.

At the moment i see an orange C and a light blue S, which is new to me.

Anyway, what are these for? What do they mean?

They mean:
C:Unread combat logs
S:Unread sparring logs

Also, REC in red means you have the macro recorder active (ctrl-r I think)

And if you see H, it means unread hunting log.
That's probably all there is to it.

More amusing would be to then play it back and see what kind of havoc 3-5 years worth of commands would wreak on your dwarves.
