Miners not mining

I'm playing the Dwarf Fortress 2010 version for the Captain Duck video tutorials, and for some reason, my miners aren't mining. I have an area designated for digging, yet they aren't, and the manager lists that they don't have a current job. Any help would be appreciated!

Are they holding picks?
Check be [V]iewing a miner, then checking his nventory.
