Tame sapient babies are doomed in .13--bug or feature?
« on: September 18, 2010, 09:32:19 pm »

Everyone's heard about the baby immigrants that crawl in alone, but who cares about them?  They're just body armor without a body to armor.

Been waiting for a breeding pair of tigerpeople for years now; the elves could bring them (as in, they did bring a tigerman, once, and then my PC crashed), but haven't.  After capturing about twenty mountain gnomes, I decided to add [PET]/[CAN_SPEAK] to their raws.  (It's not filthy cheating; just somewhat grungy.  And the gorlak's prefstrings say they speak, anyway...)

I set them free and they had children, only to drop their newborns on the ground.  Unlike my tigermen and their cubs of .12, the gnomes seem to have actual infants: like dwarf babies, they seem to be always prone, but unlike dwarf babies, the parent wanders off and leaves the kid crawling all over the fort instead of carrying them.  This leads to the new gnomes dying when they get hungry/thirsty and can't crawl to the food/well in time.

It is sad.  :[  And also a miasma problem.

Modding botch?  Or new to this version?

You could also make it so babies don't require food or water, or take a day to turn into a child.

Thats not possible for now.
The least time it can take for a creature to bcome adult is a year.
Sorry, no days in it or something.

Just wall in the baby gnomes with a bunch of food...

They decided to leave my fortress via the circus because the front door was locked to keep Goblins out.  THAT should be an interesting trip back to the Mountainhome.

If they are like pets, can you assign them to cages and chains?

if you can assign them to chains, just make a baby prison (call it a daycare center if you like :P ) and chain them up next to food and drink...

fairly space efficient, all babies have access to the well and a food stockpile... just hope none of them go melancholy and jump in the well...

If I remove the [CAN_SPEAK] tag, I'll never get a Stray Mayor (tame) again!  :[

If they are like pets, can you assign them to cages and chains?

That's a plan.  I've got a huge, luxurious multi-well room and a few hundred spare plant fiber ropes...

Thanks, guys.  Anyone know if this happens to tigerpeople in .13, though?

(Yes, I have a thing for tigerpeople.)

Oh, they'll breed. Just not with one another, if you catch my drift.

Only in Dwarf Fortress would babies randomly being dropped by their parents and dying be considered a feature.

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.
