Obsidian Problem (possibly .13 related)
« on: September 21, 2010, 10:19:20 am »

I can't get my masons to use obsidian. It's not in the stone menu so I can't unrestrict it. I created the obsidian and haven't actually found any on my map. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.

The google-cache Wiki says:
Quote
Obsidian is not currently listed as an economic stone (z > stone). You cannot switch between "use" and "not use", so you can only use obsidian for constructions if you embark in a biome with an obsidian layer. See the discussion page for a workaround.

To allow obsidian  to be listed, you have to remove its "max edge" tag from the raws. You can add it back after switching, and the game will remember its "cannot use" status.

That explains that. I'll go look for a cache of the discussion page. I'm so lost without the wiki.

That didn't seem to solve the problem. Obsidian is still never listed.

It won't be listed, but it will be available to your masons and stoneworkers.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.

I've tried all sorts of options. After each one I would tell my mason to make 2-3 cabinets from a workshop in the middle of an obsidian stockpile. He'd still walk over and grab some chalk every time. (The chalk is in a dump 30-40 steps away.)

I've even added MAX EDGE to rocksalt to see if it would remove it from the list but no luck.

Is there some way to refresh the list or something?

Forbidding all other stone results in job cancelations due to no non-economic stone.

You need to remove [MAX_EDGE] from your region-specific raws (i.e. data/save/regionX/raw/objects/...), not the base raws (which are only used when generating new worlds).

Thank you, I appreciate the emphasis. Didn't even realize there was a set of them for each region.

On that note, is there a region specific population cap? I've since lowered mine for this fort but it seems to be completely ignored. (set to 120, up to 188 and still getting migrants, only 20-30 kids atm)

The population cap only gets checked when the Dwarven caravan arrives (possibly when it safely leaves), so if it's been getting preempted by sieges, that might explain things a bit.
