How important would you (the people who populate this forum) say trust is? How quick should one be to trust, to what degree, and in what situations?

Evidently there is the case where someone can be abused if they trust too much in someone else. If someone comes up to you and says "I need some money to pay for my sister's cacer treatment", then you might choose to trust that person and give them money. That trust can be easily abused.

There are other cases, too. A parent might say to a rebellious teenager "wear a high-visibility jacket when you ride your bicycle". The teenager might then think "screw that, it looks ugly" and put themselves in danger.

There are many situations in which people seem able to put an astounding amount of trust in other people and organisations. For example, a great many people entrust their entire life savings in a bank.

Of course, there are going to be many people who will say "One should only trust in people if they have proven themselves to be trustworthy". This brings up a further question: Is it really trust in that situation?

To trust someone completely is being a fool.
To trust someone on something without a good reason is being a fool.
Finding poeple you can trust on some matter, and knowing on what matter you can trust someone is extremely important.

Unfortunately, trust is one of those hard things to define in words, but that way I personally see it covers a couple of things:
-To value the judgement or actions of someone else above your own
-To place something you value in the care of something else

I disagree about you definition. I think of trust as knowing what a person will do in a situation. That is very important, because if you know what someone is going to do that gives you power over them. Great power you can use to control and manipulate. Soon all will bow to you.

I don't trust people, been paranoid since I was a child, even that mentioned in my own thread made the paranoia much much worse. Paranoia has gone down since then, but I doupt it'll go down much more. After all, being paranoid of people is more helpful than harmful, atleast until you get to the point where you are susspecting family of litterally stabbing you in the back and killing you, or the steryotype of 'the CIA is listening to my thoughts man!'
